Top 10 Currencies Traded on the Forex Market

March 11th, 2010

When people hear of currencies changing, they are often confused. When they hear of the dollar gaining or losing on other types of currency, that do not realize that the currency is actually being bought, sold, and traded. The forex market, also known as the foreign exchange market, is a way for companies, banks, and individuals to trade currencies to try to gain on their initial investments. The forex market is different and unique; the three markets (US, Europe, Asia) have at least one running at all times during the weekdays; this makes this a 24 hour a week-day market, working constantly on the week days to make sure currencies can be traded. All currencies have the opportunity to be traded, but there are obviously major players that are traded the most on the forex market. There are 10 players on the market that find themselves a part of a majority of the trades that happen on the forex market.

The Norwegian Krone, the Hong Kong Dollar, and the Swedish Krona

The Norwegian Krone is the number 10 most traded currency in the forex market, as it is a part of nearly 1.5 percent of the daily transactions that happen. The Hong Kong dollar is the number 9 most traded currency as far as the forex market is concerned. Hong Kongs Dollar is a part of nearly 2 percent of the daily transactions. The Swedish Krona is a part of over 2 percent of the daily trades on the forex market.

The Canadian Dollar, the Australian Dollar, and the Swiss Franc

The Canadian Dollar finds itself at number 7 on the forex most traded list with over 4percent of the daily transaction on the forex market. The Australian Dollar finds itself with over 5 percent of the daily forex transactions and at number 6 on the list, and the Swiss Franc finds itself at number 5 with over 6 percent of the daily transactions.

The British Pound and the Japanese Yen

The British Pound, often compared to the Us dollar, finds itself at number four on the forex most traded list by being apart of nearly 17 percent of the daily transactions. The Japanese Yen comes in at number 3. The Yen is featured in slightly over 20 percent of the daily transactions on the forex market.

The Euro, and the United States Dollar

The Euro is an interesting currency, as it is the currency for multiple countries. This includes countries like Germany. Germany has the bank that does the most trading in the forex market. The Euro is the number two most traded currency on the forex market, as it is a part of nearly 37 percent of the daily transactions. The United States Dollar is easily the most powerful currency on the market, as it is a part of nearly 90 percent of the transactions that occur daily. As the number one most traded currency, it has 5 of the top 10 most active traders on the forex market.

Just Who Trades Forex Currencies?

March 10th, 2010

Fifteen years ago, you would not hear about people trading on the Forex market-at least not real people. Until that time, only central banks, large hedge funds, and other financial giants like Warren Buffet could afford to dabble in the currencies markets. Today, however, the Forex is the most fluid market in the world with nearly 2 trillion dollars trading hands from Sunday through Friday afternoon-24 hours a day. Investors from all over the world are drawn to the Forex for the following reasons:

·Trading occurs 24 hours per day, 5 days a week so investors always have access to brokers and the ability to trade and make profit

·Online trading platform makes trading easy and most can be personalized to suit your particular trading style and needs

·Very large and liquid market making it easy to enter and exit positions

·Volatile market that is prone to rapid price fluctuations-and the potential to make big profits-or take a big loss!

·Trading is leveraged but brokers tend to offer very low margins (as little as 1% of the transaction total can be used as capital)

·No commission for trading-brokers make their money on the spread, or the difference between the ask and bid price

·Ability to set stop/loss points and limit potential loss while pursuing maximum profit

Basically, the Forex offers the thrill and chase you might find in Vegas along with the technical analysis and detective work people associate with Wall Street. As far as who actually trades on the Forex market, there are two basic groups emerging as the majority players:

1.29-39 yr. old, computer savvy professionals looking for an additional revenue stream with unlimited potential, a convenient and dynamic investment interface, and the ability to limit loss while maximizing opportunities. This group of investors tend to either have a degree or have taken some college courses. While many are putting some of the profits away for retirement, most investors in this demographic are looking for additional income to help pay bills, finance lifestyles, and perhaps pay off mortgages early.

2.Baby Boomers: That’s right, there are nearly 80 million official members of the baby boomer generation nearing 60 and thoughts of retirement. Only 25% report having $50,000 or more set aside for savings aside from their primary residence-and many are looking for a safe, secure way to boost retirement funds. The convenience of the Internet combined with the large potential for profit and limited risk make the Forex an increasingly attractive investment option for baby boomers hoping to add some real money to their retirement account in short order. Baby boomers especially love brokers who offer free demo accounts for the investor to learn the ins and outs of the Forex market before actually risking any money.

Like any investment tool, the Forex market presents risk for any potential investor. It is the risk that creates the opportunity for both profit and loss. And, like most investments, taking the time to do the homework and identify trends helps make more informed and guided decisions. For anyone looking to make a real boost in their income or retirement account, the Forex offers an opportunity to earn unlimited profits-but the losses can mount too so be sure to place stop/loss orders with any position to limit exposure.

Why Are Currencies And Forex So Popular?

March 10th, 2010

It is called a pip and its value is the equivalent of 0.0001 of a dollar, in most currency pairs, and it is the smallest increment on the Forex market. A pip in the Japanese Yen is 0.01. Now you might find yourself wondering what the Forex market actually is and why anyone would possibly think chasing pips was ever going to be a profitable endeavor. However, with almost $2 trillion dollars being exchanged on the Forex each and every day it is open (from Sunday through Friday, the market trades 24 hours a day), those pips can quickly add up to big profits-or big losses-really quick. This makes it one of the most exciting, volatile, and engaging markets in the investment world.

So what exactly is the Forex anyway? Well, the Forex is just a big market where corporations, nations, and investors can exchange money. For instance, if an American corporation wanted to fund their payroll account for an office in Paris, they would need to convert U.S. dollars into Euros. However, one U.S. dollar does not equal a Euro.

To convert the money, the business would need to buy Euros with dollars on the Forex. The USD/EUR currency pair is what the company would need to buy in order to raise the money for payroll. A typical transaction on the Forex is called a lot and is $100,000 and the USD is behind 90% of all trades on this volatile market. So, if the currency pair was valued at 1.2500USD, that means that the business would receive 80,000 Euros for every $100,000 lot of the USD/EUR currency pair at that exchange rate.

Now remember those pips? Although a pip is a very small number, the sheer size of the lot means that a 1 pip movement equals $10 ($100,000 X .0001). Thus, an investor can get in and out of a position very quickly if the price fluctuates by only a few pips and still make a profit (Forex scalping). It is very possible for a Forex trader to double their investment in a very short period of time-but they can lose it just as easily!

Until recently, retail Forex investors did not exist. Because of the size of the transactions, traders on the Forex used to be limited to large investment firms, central banks, etc. Now, however, a Forex investor can typically secure a position for as little as $1,000 (or 1/100th of the total transaction amount). However, because there are always interest charges associated with any leveraged position, that means that an investor can quickly lose their capital if things swing the wrong way.

Of course, no one has a crystal ball and can predict the future but Forex traders use a number of strategies to help them determine when to exit and enter positions. While profit potential is unlimited, stops are typically placed on orders to prevent unacceptable losses. No matter what investment strategy you choose to use when trading on the Forex-it is very wise to place stops on every order because the volatility of the market can sap a highly leveraged account very quickly.

Trading currencies on the Forex is so popular because the action is non-stop and the opportunity for profit is unlimited. However, because of the margins and volatility of the market itself, the Forex can make or break an investor quickly. New investors are highly encouraged to start out with mock accounts or even mini-lots ($10,000) in order to learn the market better before jumping in with both feet.
